Well, after 7 days of intense gaming, Awesome Games Done Quick 2016 is over. And walking away with a donation total of OVER $1.2 MILLION USD to charity is nothing to sniff at. But yes, now we have had a few days to recuperate and get our sleep-deprivation in check, let’s look back at the highlights of each day!
(I’ll be keeping these to a single, Nintendo-related run each day, with a few bonus runs linked in the day summary!)
The opening day of AGDQ2016 was pretty damn awesome, with an fantastic Splatoon run to start the day, as well as a close Diddy Kong Racing race and absolutely bizarre Super Mario 64 Multiplayer speedrun – something I’ve never really seen before, for sure. For me, the highlight was the insanely close Super Mario Kart race!
Day 2 had a bunch of cool runs with Disney games, including the addition of Super Star Wars into the Disney block (because Star Wars is totally a Disney game now), and the always-entertaining Goof Troop run. For me, the absolutely top run of the day was the amazing Aladdin run – it was a little shaky, but impressive nonetheless.
Y’know what? There might have been some other cool things shown this day, but I almost don’t care. For me, there was only one run for the day:
Super Metroid: Two Players, One Controller.
Absolutely. Amazing.
(Bonus: Have a little bit of bonus fan art for the achievement)
Oh man, oh man, too much today, and so many amazing runs.
Fantastic games: Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, Super Mario Bros. 3, Yoshi’s Island done in less than 10 minutes (!)
Awful games (always my highlight): Lagoon, Escape from Atlantis, Utsurun Desu, Animorphs
But the top run of the day? It wasn’t done by a person. The TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun) block is where pre-played gameplay is run on consoles faster then a human ever could. These amazing coders re-built Mario Maker into Super Mario All Stars live. I just – I can’t describe it. Watch the video below.
There were some really cool Rare N64 runs including Banjo-Kazooie, and Blast Corps (with developer commentary – very cool!). But the top of the day? A blindfolded Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! run. Absolutely amazing to watch.
There are some really, really cool runs today – heaps of Zelda, Mega Man, and Pokémon runs – frankly too many to list. By the top for me was the insane, crazy-long Majora’s Mask 4-player co-op run, collecting EVERY item in the game. If you’ve got some time, I highly recommend it.
The final day had a stack of amazing runs! TASBot had a reappearance playing a bunch of games, with the highly-artistic Brain Age… “run”… being the highlight of it’s little section.
Although there was a really cool Mario Kart 8 run and a fantastic Mario Kart 64: Two Players, One Controller run, the most inventive run of the day goes to…
Well, It goes to two of them.
The Reverse Boss Order run is always impressive to me. It involves some really, really crazy strategies to make it work, and shows the skill of the runners off in amazing style. The two done this year, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid are no exception.
Well, that’s it for me! Let us know below your favourite runs of the event, and I hope to experience it with you all again at Summer Games Done Quick!
Magnets, always with the magnets.
