The Nintendo Experience store was a shining light of warmth amidst a cold, dark start to the second half of 2010. At 7am on July 1st, EB Games in Swanston St, Melbourne played host to one of the most exciting Nintendo video game launches ever.
Super Mario Galaxy 2, heralded as one of the best video games of all time, has finally hit Australian stores. Upon arrival, the hundreds of Mario fans that attended received a Super Mario showbag containing a limited edition Super Mario Galaxy 2 thermos mug and wristband.
TV and Radio personality Jabba (Jason Davis) welcomed Nintendo fans from all across Melbourne and continued to emcee events as they transpired throughout the morning. Note: Jabba enjoys poking fun at Nintendo employees.
So how exactly do you celebrate the launch of a video game that will likely be remembered as a classic in 20 years time? You set a new World Record, of course! To the delight of all in attendance, Mario arrived shortly after proceedings began and commenced hugging every person in sight! Mario received 172 hugs in just 20 minutes, setting the World Record for hugs by a mascot. Each hug was captured on camera and everyone involved in setting the record received a glossy photo of their magic Mario moment.
But wait, there’s more! Every person who purchased a copy of Super Mario Galaxy 2 went into the draw to win a copy of the game signed by Mario’s creator, the great Shigeru Miyamoto. There was also a prize given for the best dressed, which fittingly went to a young fan dressed as his video game hero, Mario.
Nintendo employees also ran a coin challenge throughout the day, utilising one of the stages of Super Mario Galaxy 2. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL7h5yJhQoE)
The objective was to collect all 100 coins in the fastest time possible. Unfortunately my own personal attempt was not very successful, and I was taken out by the Shadow Marios before I could collect all the purple coins.
Finally, there were Mario Bros quizzes throughout the day which gave Mario fans the chance to take home some fantastic items, such as Super Mario Galaxy 2 calendars and playable Nintendo Game & Watch keychains. Congratulations to all the lucky winners!
With so much happening, it was easy to work up a thirst and an appetite. Luckily Nintendo provided Krispy Kreme donuts and Red Bull energy drinks to keep everyone focused on the most important of tasks – racing home to get stuck into the amazing Super Mario Galaxy 2! Thanks to Nintendo Australia and EB Games for hosting such a memorable event.
As always, the Vooks team were happy to be a part of it all.
