400,000 Wii U consoles sold in the US for week one

Nintendo of America has sent out a press release revealing just how well the Wii U has done in its first week on sale. According to Nintendo’s own figures there were 400,000 units sold, in just America in its first week. The original Wii sold around 475,000 units in its first 8 days on sale back in 2006 (this figure is simply for North America, not the ‘Americas’, that figure is 600,000).

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime though is confident saying that “Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock”.  Seems like if Nintendo had more available, they probably would have sold them.

Nintendo’s other systems did well too with over 300,000 Wii consoles sold recently. Seems like the cheap price is working a treat over there for Black Friday. The DS also outsold the 3DS as well, 275,000 to 250,000 respectively. Considering there were some great deals going for the DS, this isn’t surprising. Nintendo did point out though that the 3DS has still got one million more consoles sold over the DS in the same time frame however.
