Industry analysts peg high costs for 3DS development

Marvelous Entertainment has predicted that developing a Nintendo 3DS game may cost between 50 million and 150 million yen. That’s about $600,000 – $1.8 million USD. These were the minimum and maximum outlays Marvelous Entertainment were prepared to give to develop just one game.

Japanese gaming blog Hachimaki, which wrote the article, also compared these costs with the average costs of developing a game in 2009; $53,000 – $527,000 for a DS title, and $36,000 – $710,000 for a PSP game. The average Wii game cost $1.4 million to develop.

Can we expect a higher level of quality from games developed for the 3DS? This new standard could see a lot less shovelware and more standout classics?

Let’s hope.
