2012’s Best Selling Video Games for Australia and New Zealand Revealed
The bestselling games for Australian and New Zealand in 2012 have been revealed and there aren’t too many surprises. The information comes straight from the NPD Group here in Australia and accounts for all games sold at retail, so no digital or Steam sales.
Unsurprising the top three games between the two regions are the same with Call of Duty Black Ops 2 taking the crown for bestselling game in Australia and New Zealand for 2012.
In second place was Assassin’s Creed III and in third was Halo 4. The FIFA franchise continues to grow with a 4th place in 2012.
The next three places are all Activision Blizzard games; they are Skylanders Giants, 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Diablo III. Although this won’t be the last time Activision Blizzard features on the chart.
Next up is Borderlands 2 from 2K and then it’s followed by another 2011 title in the form of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Last but not least is Skylanders Spyros Adventure, the original game from 2011 as well. It’s should be surprising to see so many games from 2011 outselling games in 2012 however when they’re Call of Duty, Skyrim and Skylanders it’s you can see why.
The New Zealand chart is pretty much the same however it features Battlefield 3, yet another 2011 title. It also features Mass Effect 3 and Farcry 3 which are missing from the Australian chart.
Sadly there are no Nintendo exclusive games on the chart at all; considering all of the games above are multiplatform aside from Halo 4 and Diablo III you shouldn’t be too worried. However Pokemon: White did chart last year for Nintendo.

Slowly ‘the internet’ realises it is not the KPI for videogames anymore.
Fifa? It still astounds me that sports games remain so popular, they seem to exist in a parallel universe to the rest of video games and the gamers who play them.
Not really surprised at all from the results.
CoD? Check. Assassin’s Creed? Check. FIFA? Check. Blizzard games? Check. Halo? Check. And the rest are all multi-platform games, so it figures they’d appear there.
Sports games are always popular. They don’t have the pre-conceived notion of being “weird” which makes them appeal to a wider market IMO. Same with stuff like CoD.
Not surprised with no Nintendo games cracking the top 10. There haven’t really been any releases to warrant lots of sales. The 2D Mario games are very similar to the DS/Wii editions and I think people realised that.
Pokemon X and Y next year will be interesting. Also Mario Kart U if that makes holiday season of this year.
I would like to see a the a top 10 sales list for games that are exclusive to one console
That is the saddest list I have ever seen. Not one game on that list appeals to me.
