Nintendo to actively expand character licencing to other developers and media formats

Nintendo is going to be more open to letting others use its IP from now on.

During its investors and analyst briefing today in Tokyo, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told the room that Nintendo is now planning to use its wide range of character IP more actively.

Iwata says the change in heart comes from that in the past Nintendo would be passive about other companies using its characters for fear of damaging the value of them. Previously Nintendo characters would only appear in their games, but now this is going to change.

Nintendo will be seeking out ‘appropriate partners’ for this expansion and this will include allowing Nintendo characters into other digital fields other than video games. This is provided of course they’re not in direct competition with Nintendo and its a win-win for both companies.

Could we see the return of Nintendo TV shows and movies? Perhaps in other media like comics. What do you think Nintendo have planned?

I think they realised the missed opportunity with the last Soul Calibur, so this’ll likely bring in Skyward Sword Link into Soul Calibur VI. I’m hoping for Samus instead, but yeah…
